Worldwide Tidal Power Projects Currently Operating or Under Construction
On October 17, 2008, Clean Current reinstalled the shrouded tidal energy turbine at Race Rocks. The turbine now has several upgrades developed on the basis of the experience of the first installation. Stainless Steel bearings have now been installed, and a new lubricating system with environmentally friendly lubricant was added. A new wire protection system was added, and the duct was substantially reinforced, as were the struts holding the central ring. The blade configuration was also modified.
On 26th May, 2008 Irish company OpenHydro has become the first tidal energy company to complete the connection of a tidal turbine to the UK national grid and commence electricity generation. OpenHydro’s 250kW Open-Centre Turbine is installed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) off Orkney, Scotland. EMEC is the only independent and publicly financed facility in the world for testing tidal and wave technologies.
